Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is paramount to the success of any online venture.

It doesn't matter how great the product you're selling is, if nobody ever visits your website.

What's the solution?

There are many ways you can get people to visit your website, but via search engines is certainly the most profitable method.

Why?

Well, with search engines your site should (in theory) only appear when people are looking for your particular product. What this means is that you're getting 'quality visitors' to your site who will all be potentially interested in your product.

There are two ways you can get your website to appear on search engines: In the paid listings with PPC or in the natural listings with SEO.

If you run a search with Google, Yahoo or any of the other search engines you'll notice they have small adverts around the top and the sides of the page consisting of about 4 small lines of text. These are PPC adverts.

Running down the middle of the page you'll see more detailed adverts with longer lines of text. These are known as 'natural' or 'organic' listings. These websites don't have to pay anything to appear as the search engine is simply rewarding them for having quality content.

So to review...

Pay Per Click (PPC) Marketing - This is where you post an advert on one of the Search Engines and pay a varying amount of money everytime somebody clicks on your advert. If you think Pay Per Click is what you're looking for then visit our dedicated section on PPC for further information.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - This is where you make changes to your site (and carry out some other work) in order to appear higher in the 'natural listings' and optimise your website for search engine performance.

What do I need to do to improve my website's search engine performance?

Well, every website is different and as such some will require more work than others to improve their SEO. However, here's an example of three things you can do to any site to improve it's performance:

  • Add written content - search engines love words and if you fill your website with hundreds or even thousands of pages of words relating to your product, then you'll almost certainly see an upturn in the amount of traffic you get from search engine
  • Get more links - it's so important to have other websites linking directly to yours. The reason is simple: search engines see these other websites linking to yours and as a result see you as a credible resource and therefore will improve your search engine rankings. This is definitely one of the most important aspects of SEO. In markets with even just a small level of competition, you need links to have any chance
  • Improve your navigation - It's important that people that visit your website can easily get from one page to the next. Equally, search engines need the same functionality. The easier they can get around your site, the more pages they can find and the better your rankings will be. Make sure your menu links to all your pages, especially the most important ones. Then add links in your pages to other related content on your site. This will ensure your website is properly knitted together.

Question: What's the problem with all of these things?

Answer: They all take time.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the time available to carry out tasks like these and do all the other jobs that will help drive their business forward.

Creating a website from start to finish

When people ask me what I do for a living and I awkwardly attempt to tell them without making their head explode (you'll know if you work in SEO) one question that always seems to come up is:

"How do I create a website?"

The answer I give is normally the same:

"Depends what kind of website you want to create."
